About this course

Medicine is one of the most demanding and most rewarding paths a student can take, requiring a combination of scientific rigour, clinical judgement, communication skill and sustained commitment to the wellbeing of others. A medical degree is not simply an accumulation of knowledge; it is a formation in a way of thinking and acting that will shape your entire career. You will learn to reason from evidence, to tolerate uncertainty, to listen carefully and to make decisions that matter profoundly to the people in your care. This five-year full-time programme at the University of Nottingham prepares you for the full breadth of medical practice. Candidates are considered on an individual basis and a broad range of qualifications is accepted, with the requirements applying to 2027 entry. A typical entry tariff of 168 points gives an indication of the level of academic preparation expected. The programme integrates scientific and clinical learning from an early stage, so you will engage with the underlying biological, biochemical and physiological principles that explain how the body works and how disease disrupts it, while also developing clinical skills through early and sustained contact with patients in a range of healthcare settings. You will develop competence in clinical examination, history-taking, diagnostic reasoning and communication, and you will learn to work effectively as part of the multidisciplinary teams that deliver modern healthcare. The five-year structure gives you sufficient time to develop confidence across the full range of core clinical areas before you qualify. Graduates register with the General Medical Council and complete foundation training before specialising in their chosen field. The range of specialities available within medicine is enormous, from surgery and general practice to psychiatry, radiology, pathology and public health. Some graduates pursue academic medicine, combining clinical work with research, while others move into medical education, health policy or global health roles. A medical qualification from the University of Nottingham is a foundation for a career of considerable scope and social purpose.
