About this course
Medicine is the discipline concerned with understanding, diagnosing, and treating human disease and injury, and with promoting the health of individuals and populations. It draws on the full range of biological sciences, from the molecular mechanisms of disease to the physiology of organ systems, alongside the clinical skills needed to assess patients, reason about diagnoses, and deliver treatments safely and compassionately. Becoming a doctor requires not only the acquisition of a vast body of knowledge but the development of professional judgement, ethical awareness, communication skills, and the personal resilience needed to work effectively under pressure in demanding situations. At the University of Manchester, the MB ChB programme educates, trains, and prepares students for practice in the healthcare systems of today and the future. Manchester is the largest medical school in the UK, with a correspondingly broad and experienced faculty and extensive clinical networks across the North West. The five-year full-time programme takes you from the foundational science of the human body through the clinical skills of examination and investigation to the supervised clinical practice in hospitals and community settings that prepares you for qualification. The entry tariff of 168 points reflects the high standard of academic preparation expected, alongside the clinical and personal aptitude that selection processes assess. Medicine is one of the most directly vocational degrees available, leading to qualification as a doctor and to work in one of the most respected and socially important professions. Graduates undertake a period of foundation training before progressing to specialty training in their chosen area, which may be in any branch of medicine or surgery, general practice, public health, or a range of other specialties. A small number of graduates pursue academic medicine, combining clinical practice with research.
