BSc Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry
About this course
Medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry applies the principles of organic and physical chemistry to one of the most consequential areas of applied science: the discovery, design, and development of medicines. Understanding how the structure of a molecule determines its interactions with biological systems, and how those interactions can be modulated to produce therapeutic effects, is the core intellectual challenge of the discipline. It is a field that connects fundamental chemical science to clinical medicine and to the global pharmaceutical industry. At Loughborough University, this four-year full-time programme is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to understand how drugs and medicines are designed, developed, and how they work, preparing you to contribute to the creation of future medicines. You will study organic synthesis, reaction mechanisms, spectroscopy, and physical chemistry alongside pharmacology, drug-receptor interactions, pharmacokinetics, and the drug development process from target identification through to clinical trials. Laboratory work is central to the programme, developing your practical skills in synthesis, purification, and analysis, and you will also engage with the scientific literature in the field. The programme includes a year abroad, which places you in a different research environment and broadens your scientific perspective and professional network. Graduates from medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry programmes are well positioned for careers in pharmaceutical research and development, contract research organisations, biotechnology, analytical chemistry, regulatory affairs, and medicinal chemistry consultancy. Many pursue postgraduate research degrees in medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, or drug delivery, which is the typical route into academic and senior industrial research positions. Professional qualifications in areas such as clinical science and toxicology are also relevant for graduates moving into those fields.
