BSc Medical Genetics
About this course
Medical genetics is the study of the role that genes and inheritance play in health and disease. It is a discipline that has been transformed by advances in genomic sequencing and molecular biology, making it possible to understand the genetic basis of conditions ranging from rare single-gene disorders to the complex polygenic contributions to common diseases such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The field connects fundamental biological science to clinical medicine, diagnostic testing, genetic counselling, and the development of targeted therapies. At Swansea University this four-year full-time programme sits within the broader area of biomolecular sciences, covering genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and the medical and clinical applications of these disciplines. You will develop a thorough understanding of how genes function and are regulated, how genetic variation is detected and interpreted, and how genomic information is used in clinical and research contexts. The programme develops both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills, preparing you for a range of professional and academic roles. Medical genetics is an active and expanding field, and the breadth of training this degree provides opens a wide range of career options. Graduates move into academic and industrial research laboratories, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, diagnostic genetics services, genetic counselling (following further training), patent law, medical writing and scientific consultancy. Some graduates proceed to medical school or other health profession training following their degree. Postgraduate study in medical genetics, genomics, molecular biology or related fields is a common pathway for those who want to pursue research or specialist clinical roles.
