BSc Medical Biochemistry with Research Placement
About this course
Medical biochemistry applies the tools of chemistry and molecular biology to the understanding of human health and disease, examining how biological molecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates, function in the body and how their disruption underlies conditions ranging from cancer and diabetes to inherited metabolic disorders and infectious disease. It is a discipline that underpins much of modern medicine, from the development of diagnostic tests and therapeutic drugs to the understanding of genetic conditions at a molecular level. At the University of Huddersfield, this four-year full-time programme includes both a foundation year and a research placement. The foundation year is designed to prepare students who need additional grounding in the sciences and study skills before progressing to degree-level biochemistry, making it an accessible entry route for those whose prior qualifications in chemistry and biology may not meet standard entry requirements. Once you move into the main degree years, the curriculum covers core areas of biochemistry and molecular biology, including enzyme kinetics, cell signalling, genomics, metabolism, and the biochemical basis of disease. The research placement gives you the opportunity to work in a laboratory environment engaged in genuine scientific inquiry, developing practical skills and an understanding of how research is conducted and communicated. Huddersfield has invested in its biomedical and chemical sciences facilities, and the research placement element gives you direct experience of working in a scientific environment beyond the undergraduate teaching laboratory, which is valuable preparation for graduate employment or postgraduate study. Graduates of medical biochemistry programmes are well placed for careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, clinical biochemistry and pathology within the NHS, academic and industrial research, and science communication. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study, including doctoral research or conversion programmes into clinical scientific roles.
