MA Mediaeval History and Middle East Studies
About this course
Medieval History and Middle East Studies is a pairing that illuminates the long, entangled past of Europe and the Islamic world during the centuries before modernity reshaped both. Medieval history is not simply the study of a distant era but an engagement with the political structures, religious movements, intellectual traditions, and cultural exchanges that formed the foundations of contemporary societies. The Middle East in the medieval period was at the centre of some of the most significant developments in science, philosophy, theology, and trade, and studying it alongside European medieval history reveals how deeply interconnected these worlds were. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme leads to an MA (Hons) and is built around the close reading of primary sources, the development of sophisticated historical argument, and the study of languages and traditions spanning Arabic, Persian, and medieval European contexts. You will engage with complex historiographical debates, learn to interpret sources critically, and develop the kind of analytical and expressive rigour that marks a well-trained historian. A year abroad forms part of the programme, giving you the opportunity to study within a different academic or cultural environment and deepen your engagement with the languages and regions the degree covers. Graduates of history and area studies programmes go on to careers in diplomacy, the civil service, international organisations, journalism, education, law, publishing, and cultural heritage management. The ability to analyse complex information, construct clear arguments, and understand different cultural and historical perspectives is highly transferable. Postgraduate study in history, Middle Eastern studies, Islamic studies, or international relations is a natural continuation for those who wish to pursue research or specialist professional paths.
