BA Media Production
About this course
Media production is the practical and conceptual discipline concerned with creating digital content, understanding the industries within which that content is made and distributed, and developing the professional skills needed to sustain a career in a creative sector characterised by both opportunity and precariousness. It encompasses video production, audio content, documentary, journalism, digital storytelling and the business and organisational dimensions of working in media, from understanding how audiences consume content to how media companies operate and how to manage creative projects and teams. At City St George's, University of London you will study for three years full-time, developing both the key practical skills for creating digital content and the contextual knowledge needed to understand the bigger picture: how media is distributed, how audiences are built and engaged, how the business of media works, and how to navigate the creative industries as a professional. The programme includes a sandwich year in professional practice and a year abroad, giving you extended industry experience and an international perspective on a media landscape that is genuinely global in its reach and interconnections. Media production graduates work as video producers, documentary makers, broadcast journalists, content creators, social media managers, podcast producers, news journalists, content strategists and production managers across television, radio, digital media, film, advertising and the growing range of platforms and channels that constitute contemporary media. Many graduates also work in media-adjacent roles in communications, public relations, marketing and corporate media. Postgraduate study in journalism, documentary, media management or digital media is a natural route for graduates who want to specialise or develop their practice in a more focused direction. The combination of creative and contextual training is what distinguishes media production graduates from purely technical practitioners.
