BA Media Production
About this course
Media production is the practical discipline of creating content across the full range of platforms and formats through which audiences now engage with the world. It encompasses television, radio, podcasting, online video, social media, and the new and emerging digital platforms that continue to reshape the media landscape. It demands both creative vision and technical proficiency: the ability to originate and develop ideas, and the craft skills to realise them through writing, directing, shooting, and editing to a professional standard. At Birmingham City University, this three-year programme is industry-focused and designed to develop critically thinking, innovative content creators ready for the demands of professional media work. You will develop skills across the production process, from research and development through to post-production and distribution, working with professional-standard equipment and techniques. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, giving you extended professional experience inside a media organisation, and embedded work placement opportunities that connect your academic studies to the industry in which you will work. Birmingham's creative industries sector and the university's strong industry links create a context in which professional exposure is a genuine part of the educational experience. Graduates from media production programmes work in television, radio, digital media, film, corporate video production, podcasting, and journalism in roles including producer, director, researcher, camera operator, editor, writer, and content creator. The adaptability you develop across multiple platforms and formats is particularly valuable in a media industry that is itself in constant change. Some graduates move into production management, commissioning, or specialist technical roles. Further study at postgraduate level in film, media, or journalism is an option for those wishing to specialise or pursue research and teaching.
