About this course
Media and communications is the study of how information, ideas, and culture are produced, distributed, and consumed in contemporary societies. It draws on theories and methods from sociology, cultural studies, political science, and linguistics to ask how media institutions work, how audiences engage with the content they encounter, how digital platforms have transformed the media landscape, and what the consequences of all this are for public life, democracy, and everyday experience. The discipline is both analytical, concerned with understanding media critically, and practical, concerned with developing the skills to create and communicate effectively in a range of media forms. At Regent's University London, you will study media and communications over three years of full-time study, with a year abroad included in the programme. London is one of the world's major media cities, and studying there puts you in the middle of a creative and commercial ecosystem that includes broadcasting, publishing, advertising, film, social media, and journalism. The programme covers media theory and research methods, the history and structure of media industries, digital media and social platforms, journalism, visual communication, and the ethics of media practice. The year abroad takes you into a different media environment and broadens your understanding of how media operates across different cultural and political contexts, which is increasingly important in an industry that is global in its reach. Graduates from media and communications programmes enter careers across the media, communications, and creative industries.
