BA Media and Communication
About this course
Media and communication are now central to how societies function, how politics is conducted, and how individuals understand themselves and each other. The proliferation of digital platforms has extended the reach and speed of media to an unprecedented degree, reshaping the relationship between producers and audiences, amplifying some voices while marginalising others, and generating new questions about trust, truth, and the civic function of information. Studying media and communication at degree level means developing the analytical tools to understand these dynamics critically, not just as a user of media but as someone who can examine its structures, effects, and possibilities. At Glasgow Caledonian, this four-year full-time programme examines media as a central feature of contemporary social life, exploring how media industries operate, how content is produced and distributed, how audiences engage with it, and what its social and political consequences are. You will study media theory, the history of different media forms, the economics of media industries, and the relationship between media and democratic culture. The programme equips you with analytical skills alongside practical knowledge of how media organisations work, preparing you for professional roles that require both critical thinking and commercial awareness. Graduates go on to work in journalism, broadcasting, digital communications, public relations, content creation, marketing, and the media and technology industries more broadly. The analytical foundation the programme provides is also valuable in roles in policy, research, and public sector communications. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in media, journalism, communications, or related fields. The sustained growth of digital media and the complexity of the information environment mean that graduates with a serious understanding of how media works are in sustained demand.
