MEng Mechatronic and Robotic Engineering
About this course
Mechatronic and robotic engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, development, and control of intelligent machines and automated systems. It draws simultaneously on mechanical engineering, electronics, control systems, and computer programming, integrating these into the design of systems that can sense, process information, and act on the world. Robots are moving beyond the factory floor into surgery, agriculture, logistics, exploration, domestic assistance, and defence, and the engineers who design and maintain them need a genuinely cross-disciplinary skill set. At the University of Sheffield, this four-year full-time programme develops your capabilities across the full range of mechatronics and robotics engineering, from the mechanics of movement and structural design through electronic systems and sensors to programming, control theory, and artificial intelligence. Sheffield is one of the UK's leading engineering universities, with significant research activity in robotics and autonomous systems, and the programme reflects this expertise. You will learn to combine mechanics, electronics, coding, and AI to design and build functional intelligent systems. The programme includes a sandwich year with work placement and a year abroad, giving you professional experience in an engineering environment and international academic exposure during your studies. Graduates work in robotics companies, advanced manufacturing, aerospace, automotive engineering, medical devices, defence, and the growing field of autonomous systems. The cross-disciplinary nature of the training makes mechatronics engineers adaptable, capable of contributing across the engineering disciplines that make up a robotic system. Postgraduate study in robotics, control engineering, AI, or mechatronics is a natural progression for those who wish to specialise further, and professional engineering registration through the relevant engineering institutions is achievable with appropriate further development.
