About this course

Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies principles of physics, mathematics and materials science to the design, analysis and manufacture of systems that involve motion, forces and energy. From the smallest precision components to the largest industrial machinery, from consumer products to aircraft engines and renewable energy systems, mechanical engineers are responsible for creating reliable, efficient and safe solutions to physical engineering challenges. The discipline is continually evolving, with growing emphasis on automation, electrification, sustainable manufacturing and digital design tools. At the University of Salford, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional placement and a work placement, giving you direct industry experience alongside your academic study. You will build strong foundations in core mechanical engineering, including statics and dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science and manufacturing, before progressing to advanced study in areas including automation and robotics, advanced manufacturing, sustainable energy systems and electrified transportation. You will learn to design, analyse, simulate and validate complex mechanical systems using industry-standard tools including CAD software and computational methods, supported by extensive laboratory and workshop activity that develops your practical engineering skills. Mechanical engineering graduates work across a wide range of industries and roles, including design engineering, manufacturing, energy systems, automotive, aerospace, robotics, civil infrastructure and sustainable technology. The programme's emphasis on automation, electrification and sustainability means graduates are well prepared for the directions in which engineering practice is moving. Many pursue professional registration through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Postgraduate study at masters or doctoral level is a common pathway for those who want to specialise in particular areas or pursue research careers.
