Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and most fundamental of the engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture, and operation of mechanical systems from the very small to the very large. It draws on physics, mathematics, materials science, and thermodynamics to address questions about how forces and energy are transformed, how components are designed to withstand the loads placed on them, and how systems from engines and turbines to robots and medical devices are built to function reliably. Mechanical engineers work in virtually every sector of the economy, making this degree one of the most versatile in engineering. At Plymouth this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving it an unusually rich combination of academic and professional development opportunities. The foundation year builds the mathematical and scientific foundations needed before the main programme. The sandwich year and work placement provide extended professional experience, developing hands-on engineering competence and the industry relationships that support career entry. The year abroad adds an international dimension to your engineering education. Across the programme you will study core mechanical engineering areas including solid mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, materials, and design, alongside the quantitative and computational skills that modern engineering practice requires. Mechanical engineers are in consistent demand across a wide range of industries. Manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, energy, oil and gas, rail, defence, medical devices, and consulting engineering firms all employ mechanical engineers in design, analysis, project management, and research roles. Chartered Engineer status, typically pursued after a period of professional experience, is an important career milestone supported by employers in the sector. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in mechanical engineering, materials, energy systems, or related fields, while others apply their analytical and problem-solving skills to careers in management, finance, and consultancy.
