About this course

Mechanical engineering is concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture, and maintenance of physical systems. From aircraft engines and wind turbines to medical devices and manufacturing equipment, the work of mechanical engineers shapes the technology that underpins modern life. The discipline applies the principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, and design to create systems that are efficient, reliable, and fit for purpose, and it demands both analytical rigour and practical creativity. At Northumbria this four-year full-time programme builds your confidence and technical skills base while developing an awareness of engineering in its wider social, ethical, sustainable, and economic context. You will study engineering mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials, manufacturing processes, control systems, and design, developing both the theoretical foundations and the practical competence that professional engineering requires. The programme is designed not only to produce capable engineers but to prepare you for progression into engineering management roles, where the ability to understand both the technical and the organisational dimensions of engineering work is essential. A sandwich year provides the opportunity to spend a full year working in an engineering environment, gaining the professional experience that employers value and developing the contextual understanding of how engineering organisations operate. A year abroad allows you to study at an international partner institution, and work placements are integrated throughout the programme. Graduates move into careers in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, energy, defence, consultancy, and engineering management, as well as into broader technical and project management roles across many industries. Many pursue chartered engineer status through bodies such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Postgraduate study at Masters level is pursued by those who want to specialise further or move into research.
