BSc Mathematics (With Foundation Year)
About this course
Mathematics is the language in which the most precise descriptions of the world are written, and studying it to degree level develops a way of thinking that is genuinely rare and consistently valued across a remarkable range of careers. A mathematics degree is not primarily about performing calculations; it is about reasoning with precision, constructing proofs, identifying patterns, and solving problems that require you to create new approaches rather than apply known ones. The discipline encompasses pure mathematics, concerned with the internal structure and beauty of mathematical systems, and applied mathematics, which uses those tools to model and understand the physical, biological, and social worlds. At Liverpool Hope this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides an entry point for students who have the potential and motivation to succeed in mathematics but who need additional academic preparation before engaging with degree-level content. The foundation year develops mathematical confidence, study skills, and the analytical habits of mind that the main degree requires. Once you progress, you will study analysis, algebra, calculus, statistics, and further pure and applied topics, developing your mathematical fluency and the capacity to engage with problems at progressively higher levels of abstraction and difficulty. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placements integrated throughout the programme provide professional and international experience alongside your mathematical development. This combination is particularly valuable given how broadly mathematical skills transfer across industries. Graduates of mathematics programmes move into careers in finance, data science, actuarial science, computing, research, teaching, engineering, economics, and a wide range of other roles where quantitative reasoning and problem-solving are valued. Many continue to postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, or related applied fields.
