BA Mathematics / Drama and Theatre Studies
About this course
Mathematics and drama and theatre studies is a combination that brings together two disciplines that appear distant from each other but share more in common than is initially obvious. Both demand rigorous thinking within their own terms: mathematics through proof, abstraction and logical argument; theatre through the disciplined analysis of performance, text, space and the relationship between performer and audience. Studying both means developing two distinct and complementary intellectual registers, and the juxtaposition is itself intellectually stimulating. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time degree gives you a solid foundation in the core of mathematics, covering analysis, algebra, calculus, statistics and differential equations, alongside the essential disciplines that underpin contemporary practice in mathematics and science. The drama and theatre studies component takes you into the critical and practical analysis of performance, examining theatrical history, contemporary practice, dramaturgy and the relationship between text and production. You will develop skills in devising, critical analysis and the theories that inform performance-making, grounding your practical work in a rigorous academic tradition. Typical entry is around 120 UCAS tariff points. Graduates from this combination are genuinely versatile, with a profile that is distinctive in the job market. Mathematical training opens doors in data science, finance, actuarial work, software and research, while drama and theatre studies develops communication, collaboration, empathy and creative thinking that are valued across the arts, education, broadcasting and the wider creative economy. Many graduates move into teaching, where the ability to bring analytical and creative thinking to the classroom is particularly valuable. Others work in arts management, community theatre, educational drama, production and stage management. Further study in mathematics, theatre studies, education or arts administration is available for those who wish to specialise.
