Mathematics and physics is one of the most natural combinations available in higher education, because the two disciplines are deeply intertwined at every level. Understanding high-level physics without strong mathematics is impossible: the equations of quantum mechanics, general relativity and electrodynamics are not approximations but exact mathematical statements about the physical world. And for mathematicians, physics provides a vast and endlessly generative source of profound questions whose solutions have repeatedly required the development of new mathematical tools. Studying both together means developing a dual command, mathematical rigour alongside physical intuition, that is exceptionally powerful. At the University of York, this four-year full-time degree covers the core of both subjects in depth, including pure and applied mathematics, classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, statistical physics and mathematical methods. You will develop the ability to move fluently between formal mathematical analysis and physical reasoning, building the skills to tackle problems that neither discipline could address alone. The degree includes a sandwich year with work placement opportunities, giving you extended professional experience in a scientific, research or technical environment, and also incorporates a year abroad element. Typical entry is around 152 UCAS tariff points. Graduates from mathematics and physics programmes are among the most employable of all science graduates.
