Mathematics and philosophy make an unexpected but deeply coherent combination, because the two disciplines share a preoccupation with rigour, proof and the limits of what can be known. Mathematics is perhaps the most precise form of reasoning available to human beings, building structures of extraordinary complexity from simple axioms through chains of logical deduction. Philosophy, particularly in its analytic tradition, brings many of the same virtues to questions about meaning, knowledge, existence and the foundations of rationality itself. Studying both together raises questions that neither alone can fully answer, about the nature of mathematical objects, the relationship between logic and language, and what it means to justify a belief or prove a theorem. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme combines teaching in mathematics that develops your ability to understand complex patterns and structures and to analyse them with rigour, with philosophical study that deepens your understanding of the conceptual and logical frameworks that mathematical and philosophical reasoning share. You will engage with the philosophy of mathematics as a distinct and intellectually rich field, exploring questions about infinity, set theory, proof and the mysterious effectiveness of mathematics in describing physical reality. A year abroad gives you the opportunity to study in a different academic environment and to engage with mathematical and philosophical traditions from other universities and countries.
