About this course
Mathematics and philosophy is one of the oldest and most intellectually rich combinations available at degree level. Both disciplines are concerned with rigorous reasoning and with questions that go beyond the immediately observable, and they have been in dialogue since antiquity. Mathematics develops the capacity for precise formal reasoning, abstraction, and proof. Philosophy asks what kinds of things exist, how we can know them, what we ought to value, and how language relates to the world. Together they illuminate some of the deepest questions in human thought, including the foundations of mathematics itself: what is a number, what makes a proof valid, and what is the relationship between mathematical truth and physical reality? At the University of Manchester, this three-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides the additional mathematical and analytical preparation needed before entering the main degree. The foundation year is designed for students who have strong potential but may need to develop their mathematics or academic skills before tackling degree-level content. From the first year of the programme, you will study mathematics and philosophy in parallel, with each enriching the other. The mathematics component covers analysis, algebra, probability, and applied mathematics, developing rigorous formal skills. The philosophy component covers logic, epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, philosophy of mathematics, and philosophy of mind, developing your ability to construct and evaluate arguments with care. The combination is demanding and intellectually distinctive, and Manchester's strong departments in both subjects ensure that you receive genuinely high-quality teaching in each. Graduates from mathematics and philosophy programmes enter careers in finance, law, consulting, technology, academic research, and any field that values both rigorous quantitative thinking and careful analytical reasoning.
