Mathematical physics sits at the frontier of two of the most rigorous intellectual disciplines known to humanity. Physics seeks to understand the fundamental laws that govern matter, energy, space, and time. Mathematics provides the language and the tools through which those laws are expressed and explored. At the deepest level the two are inseparable: general relativity is differential geometry, quantum mechanics is functional analysis, and some of the most important advances in mathematics have come from physicists trying to describe nature. Studying them together, at the highest level, produces a graduate of exceptional analytical power.
