BA Marketing
About this course
Marketing is the discipline that connects products and services to the people who need or want them, combining analysis of consumer behaviour, market dynamics, and competitive landscapes with the creative development of communications, brands, and campaigns that engage audiences and drive action. It sits at the intersection of science and art, requiring both the rigour to interpret data and evaluate evidence and the creativity to produce compelling ideas and content. In a world where digital channels have multiplied the ways businesses can reach customers while simultaneously making the results of those efforts more measurable, marketing has become simultaneously more complex and more important to organisational success. At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, making the programme accessible to students who are strongly motivated but may not have the most conventional prior qualifications. A sandwich year with work placement is built into the programme, giving you a substantial period of industry experience before graduation. This is among the most significant features of the degree: you will enter the final year with a portfolio of real professional experience, and the networks and evidence of competence that employers value most highly when recruiting graduate marketers. The degree balances theory and practice throughout, developing both the conceptual frameworks of marketing and the hands-on technical skills, from digital analytics and content creation to campaign planning and brand management, needed to apply them. The programme encourages you to develop your professional interests and to channel them towards specialist areas of marketing that align with your career aspirations. Marketing graduates work across virtually every sector of the economy in roles including brand manager, content strategist, social media manager, digital marketing analyst, market researcher, account manager, and marketing director. The placement year experience is a significant advantage in recruitment, and many graduates find that their year in industry connects directly to their first permanent role. Postgraduate study in marketing, digital marketing, brand strategy, or related fields provides a route for those who wish to develop specialist expertise before entering or advancing in their careers.
