MA Management and Psychology
About this course
Management and psychology is a combination that addresses one of the most fundamental insights of organisational life: that good management is ultimately about understanding people. Management provides the frameworks for how organisations are structured, how decisions are made, how strategy is formed, and how performance is measured and improved. Psychology provides the scientific understanding of human behaviour, motivation, cognition, and social dynamics that gives those management frameworks their grounding in how people actually think and act. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time MA (Hons) programme combines a broad-ranging education in psychology, covering perception, cognition, motivation, and behaviour and grounded in the theoretical foundations and modern developments of contemporary psychological science, with management education that engages seriously with how organisations and businesses operate. Practical classes and research techniques are central to the psychology component from the start, developing the empirical and analytical skills that make psychological knowledge rigorous rather than merely intuitive. A year abroad is built into the programme, providing the opportunity to engage with management and psychology in an international academic setting. Graduates from management and psychology programmes are exceptionally well placed for careers that sit at the intersection of people and organisations. Human resources, organisational development, occupational psychology, management consulting, leadership development, talent management, and general management roles across many sectors are all well-established destinations. The combination of psychological rigour and management understanding is particularly valued in roles that require evidence-based approaches to people strategy, workplace wellbeing, and organisational effectiveness. For those who wish to pursue a career as a chartered occupational or organisational psychologist, postgraduate study accredited by the British Psychological Society is the standard route, and this undergraduate degree provides a strong foundation for that pathway.
