About this course

Learning disabilities nursing is a specialist field of nursing concerned with supporting children, young people, and adults with learning disabilities to live full, healthy, and meaningful lives. Learning disability nurses work across a wide range of settings, including community teams, supported living environments, schools, hospitals, and residential care, focusing on the whole person rather than specific medical conditions. They combine clinical nursing skills with expertise in communication, advocacy, and the support of people whose needs may be complex and whose experiences of healthcare services have historically been inadequate or inaccessible. At Cumbria this three-year full-time programme prepares you for this vital and rewarding role through a combination of academic study and substantial clinical practice placement hours in learning disability settings. The programme has a strong emphasis on collaborative learning drawing from all fields of nursing and is informed by the experiences of people with learning disabilities themselves, ensuring that your training is grounded in realistic and person-centred values. On campus you will develop clinical skills in dedicated simulation and clinical skills facilities before applying them in supervised placements, building the confidence and competence that qualified practice demands. The programme prepares you to deliver specialised and inclusive support, improving healthcare access, social inclusion, and quality of life for people with learning disabilities. Graduation from a Nursing and Midwifery Council-approved programme leads to registration as a nurse in the learning disabilities field, enabling you to practise in NHS trusts, community health services, local authority social care, independent sector providers, and voluntary organisations. Career opportunities exist across the full range of learning disability services, with progression into specialist clinical roles, team leadership, service management, or practice education. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in learning disabilities, nursing practice, health and social care leadership, or related fields.
