LLB Law with Spanish Law
About this course
Law is the foundation of organised societies, governing rights, obligations, and the resolution of disputes. Studying law in a comparative dimension, examining both the Scots and English legal systems alongside the legal system of Spain, gives you a rare vantage point from which to understand how different legal traditions approach shared human problems, and how European legal culture has developed across distinct national frameworks. Spain's legal system is rooted in the civil law tradition, which differs fundamentally in structure and reasoning from the common law of the United Kingdom, making the comparison intellectually enriching and professionally valuable. At the University of Aberdeen, this five-year full-time LLB programme gives you the breadth, depth, and flexibility for which Aberdeen Law School is known, while adding specialist study of Spanish law. You will cover the core subjects of both Scots and English law, develop fluency in comparative legal reasoning, and engage with the Spanish legal system through dedicated study. A year abroad is embedded in the programme, spent studying law in Spain and giving you direct experience of the Spanish legal environment and culture that no classroom can replicate. The five-year duration reflects the depth of both the dual legal system study and the language and cultural dimension. Graduates from this programme are well placed for careers in international law, solicitor training in Scotland or England and Wales, legal practice with a European or Spanish connection, commercial law, and roles in multinational organisations that operate across UK and Spanish legal jurisdictions. The combination of two legal traditions and a year abroad also prepares graduates for roles in international arbitration, trade, and diplomacy. Postgraduate study in law, comparative law, and international commercial law is a natural progression for those who wish to specialise.
