About this course

Law and psychology make a natural and illuminating combination. Law governs the rules by which society operates and the mechanisms through which disputes are resolved and wrongs are addressed. Psychology offers scientific insight into human behaviour, cognition, and motivation, subjects that are directly relevant to how laws are made, how they are applied, and how people respond to them. Together, the two disciplines deepen your understanding of justice not just as a formal system but as a human and social phenomenon. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year programme develops legal knowledge and psychological understanding in an integrated way. You will study the core areas of English law, including criminal law, contract, tort, and public law, developing the analytical and argumentative skills that legal study demands. Alongside this, you will engage with psychological theory and research, exploring areas such as cognition, behaviour, social influence, and the psychology of memory and testimony, all of which have direct bearing on how legal systems work in practice. The programme draws connections between the two disciplines throughout, helping you to see law from a perspective enriched by behavioural science. This full-time programme includes a sandwich year with both a work placement and a year abroad, making it one of the most experientially rich law combinations available. The placement gives you practical professional experience, while the year abroad broadens your academic and personal horizons. Graduates are well placed for a wide range of careers, including the legal profession (as a precursor to the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or bar training), criminal justice, forensic psychology, counselling, human resources, research, policy, and a range of other fields where understanding both legal frameworks and human behaviour adds distinctive value.
