LLB Law with Politics with a Foundation Year
About this course
Law with politics is a degree that brings together two disciplines that are fundamentally interconnected. Law provides the rules, principles, and institutions through which power is constrained and disputes are resolved in a civilised society. Politics examines how that power is organised, exercised, and contested, exploring the relationship between governance, ideology, institutions, and the decisions that shape public life. The two disciplines illuminate each other at every point: to understand legislation you need to understand the political processes through which it is made, and to understand political power you need to understand the legal frameworks within which it operates. At Swansea University, this programme includes a foundation year, providing an accessible route into LLB-level legal and political study. The foundation year builds the academic skills and contextual knowledge needed to succeed in law, and you progress directly into the degree on successful completion. The LLB Law with Politics programme at Swansea combines core legal subjects, covering the fundamental areas of English and Welsh law including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional law, and European law, with an in-depth exploration of political systems, governance, and the dynamics of power. You will engage with both disciplines seriously, developing legal reasoning alongside political analytical skills. Graduates are well positioned for further professional legal training, including the routes towards qualification as a solicitor or barrister. The politics dimension broadens career options to include the civil service, policy roles, journalism, public affairs, intergovernmental organisations, and NGOs. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in law, political science, or public policy, and the combination of legal and political understanding is particularly valuable in roles at the intersection of governance and law.
