About this course

Law is the formal framework through which societies define rights and obligations, manage disputes and hold individuals, organisations and governments accountable. Studying it develops the capacity for rigorous analysis, structured argument and precise written communication, skills that are valuable across an extraordinarily wide range of careers, from legal practice and the judiciary to business, policy, journalism and the public sector. At its core, a law degree trains you to read carefully, reason systematically and communicate persuasively about complex and contested questions. At Keele University, this four-year full-time LLB includes a foundation year, providing an accessible entry point for students who want to build their academic skills and legal literacy before progressing into the main degree. Once on the main programme, you will benefit from research-led legal education at a civic law school that takes seriously both academic rigour and practical preparation. You will cover the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, public law, criminal law, land law and equity, and will have opportunities to develop practical skills through activities including mooting, client interview exercises and community legal outreach work. The programme allows you to tailor your subject choices to your career aspirations as you progress. Graduates from law programmes pursue careers in soliciting, barristering, the judiciary, legal services, compliance, regulation, the civil service, international organisations and business. Many also enter careers in finance, consulting, journalism, policy and public administration, where legal training provides a highly transferable analytical foundation. Those wishing to qualify as solicitors in England and Wales will typically complete the Solicitors Qualifying Examination, while those pursuing the Bar will undertake the Bar Training Course. Postgraduate study in specialist areas of law, human rights, international relations or criminology is also a well-established pathway.
