LLB Law with Criminology
About this course
Law with criminology is a degree that pairs a rigorous legal education with a scholarly understanding of crime, deviance and the criminal justice system. Law is a discipline that trains you to reason precisely, interpret complex texts, construct arguments and understand how legal rules and institutions shape individual and social life. Criminology brings a social scientific perspective to bear on questions of crime, asking not just what the law says but why crime occurs, who it affects, how it is responded to and what justice actually means in practice. Together they give you a graduate profile that is both legally literate and sociologically informed. At Chichester, this three-year full-time programme covers the core areas of English law alongside criminological theory, research methods and the study of criminal justice policy and practice. You will develop the analytical and argumentative skills of legal education, including the ability to apply legal principles to factual scenarios and construct well-reasoned written arguments, alongside a criminological understanding of crime as a social phenomenon shaped by inequality, culture, policy and institutional practice. The degree provides a pathway into barrister and solicitor training for those who want to pursue a legal career, while also preparing graduates for work in the wider criminal justice sector. Graduates are well placed for careers in legal practice, including both barristers and solicitors who go on to work in criminal law, and for roles across the criminal justice system, including probation, youth justice, victim support, police and policy. The combination of legal knowledge and criminological analysis is also valued in research, the voluntary sector and public policy roles focused on justice reform. Postgraduate study in law, criminology or criminal justice is a natural option.
