About this course
Law is the framework of rules, rights, and obligations through which societies organise themselves, resolve disputes, protect individuals, and hold power to account. Studying it at degree level means learning not just what the law says but how it is constructed through legislation and judicial reasoning, why it takes the forms it does, and how it can be challenged and reformed. Law develops a distinctive and demanding set of intellectual skills: the ability to read complex texts precisely, to identify the relevant principles in a body of case material, to construct logical arguments under pressure, and to engage critically with contested questions about justice and authority. At Bristol, one of the leading law schools in the UK, this three-year full-time programme gives you a solid foundation of legal knowledge alongside the opportunity to explore a wide range of legal topics. You will be taught by academics who are actively shaping law, policy, and practice in their fields, and who bring current research and engagement with real legal questions into the classroom. The programme covers core areas of law essential for professional qualification, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, equity and trusts, and EU and international law, while also offering opportunities to specialise in areas of particular interest. Bristol's position in a diverse and commercially active city provides a rich environment for studying law in context. A law degree from Bristol opens a wide range of paths. The most direct routes lead to qualification as a solicitor through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or as a barrister through the Bar Professional Training Course, with training contracts and pupillages at law firms, chambers, and public bodies. Many graduates pursue legal careers in commercial, criminal, public, or international law. Others use the transferable skills the degree builds to enter careers in public policy, the civil service, finance, journalism, consulting, and business, where the capacity for rigorous analysis and precise argument is consistently valued. Some graduates also continue to postgraduate academic study in law or related fields.
