LLB Law
About this course
Law is the system through which societies define rights and obligations, resolve disputes, hold power to account and govern the relationships between individuals, organisations and the state. An LLB degree covers both the substantive content of English law and the analytical skills needed to read and apply it: how statutes are interpreted, how precedent operates, how competing legal principles are weighed and how legal argument is constructed and evaluated. It is a discipline that develops the capacity for rigorous analysis, precise writing and the evaluation of competing interpretations, skills that are valued far beyond the legal profession. At the University of Leeds this programme takes a social and institutional perspective on law, asking how and why law is created and changed and how it operates as a social institution, not merely as a technical system. You will gain expertise in legal analysis, research, logical argument and written communication as you develop an understanding of core legal subjects and specialist fields. The programme runs full time over three years and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic studies. These opportunities to engage with law in real professional and cross-national contexts are increasingly expected of law graduates entering a competitive profession. You will develop skills in legal reasoning, statutory interpretation, case analysis, professional writing and the critical evaluation of law from social and ethical perspectives. Graduates pursue professional qualifications as solicitors or barristers after completing the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or Bar Training Course, and work across private practice, in-house legal departments, the public sector and NGOs. Many also move into careers in finance, compliance, policy and commercial roles. Postgraduate study in law or a related field is also a well-established route.
