LLB Law (Scots) with Energy Law
About this course
Scots law with energy law is a degree that combines a thorough grounding in the distinctive legal system of Scotland with specialist expertise in one of the most important and rapidly evolving areas of modern commercial and regulatory law. Scots law has its own history and structure, drawing on Roman law, canon law, and the Scottish legal tradition in ways that distinguish it meaningfully from the English common law system, and it governs the legal rights and obligations of individuals, organisations, and the state in Scotland. Energy law addresses the legal frameworks that govern the production, distribution, trade, and regulation of energy, encompassing oil and gas, renewable energy, electricity markets, and the environmental and regulatory dimensions of energy policy. At the University of Dundee, this LLB programme provides the foundational legal knowledge required for qualification in Scots law, while the energy law specialism gives you expertise in a field where Scotland, with its significant oil and gas industry and growing renewable energy sector, has particular practical relevance. You will develop the key skills of legal reasoning, research, and argument alongside detailed knowledge of both the general and specialist areas of the degree. The programme runs over four years and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to engage with different legal systems and approaches to energy law in an international context, which is particularly valuable in a field where cross-border energy trade and international climate agreements are increasingly important. Graduates from Scots law with energy law degrees are well placed for careers in legal practice, particularly in the Scottish oil and gas sector, renewable energy companies, regulatory bodies, and government legal services. Many go on to complete the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice before qualifying as solicitors. Postgraduate study in energy law, environmental law, or international commercial law is also a natural route.
