LLB Law (Individual Rights)
About this course
Law is the system of rules that societies use to regulate behaviour, resolve disputes, protect rights, and structure relationships between individuals, organisations, and the state. Studying law at university means more than learning what the rules say: it means developing the ability to read legal texts precisely, construct and evaluate legal arguments, identify the principles underlying judicial decisions, and think critically about whether the law as it stands reflects values of justice and fairness. At the University of Gloucestershire, the LLB Law degree with a focus on individual rights gives you a qualifying law degree covering the core subjects required for legal practice, alongside a particular emphasis on the rights of individuals in relation to the law. You will explore the foundations of English and Welsh law and legal method, study core areas including contract, tort, criminal law, public law, equity, and land law, and engage with international and human rights dimensions of legal practice. The programme balances the theoretical underpinning of law with its practical application and the critical analysis of how law operates in the real world. A commitment to developing both intellectual ability and professional skills shapes the approach to teaching across the degree. The programme runs over three years full-time. Graduates proceed to the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or Bar Practice Course if they wish to practise as solicitors or barristers, and the qualifying law degree status of the programme provides the academic foundation for both routes. Others go into careers in paralegal work, legal compliance, human resources, the civil service, policing, social work, and a wide range of roles where legal literacy and analytical skills are valued. Postgraduate study in law, human rights, or related fields is also an option.
