LLB Law in Practice
About this course
Law is both a body of knowledge and a set of professional skills, and the best legal education develops both at once. LLB Law in Practice at Swansea is designed to be intellectually rigorous while keeping the demands of professional practice in clear view throughout, so that you graduate not just knowing what the law is but understanding how it works in practice and how a lawyer thinks, writes and advises. Over four years full time you will cover the core areas of English and Welsh law that form the foundation of any qualifying law degree, including contract, tort, criminal law, public law, property, equity and trusts, and EU law. Alongside this doctrinal foundation you will develop the skills of legal research, problem analysis, drafting, and written and oral advocacy that are central to legal careers. The four-year structure allows more time for those practical and professional dimensions of legal education that a three-year degree must compress, and the programme includes structured exposure to the kinds of workplace situations and challenges that a solicitor or barrister will encounter. The curriculum is designed to give you valuable experience of legal practice in real contexts throughout your studies. A qualifying law degree from Swansea opens the recognised pathways to legal practice in England and Wales, including the Solicitors Qualifying Examination route and Bar training. Graduates pursue careers as solicitors and barristers, and also move into the wide range of roles for which legal training is valued: the Crown Prosecution Service, government legal service, commercial contracts management, compliance and regulatory work, local government, and legal roles in financial services, technology, and the charity sector. Postgraduate study in law, specialising in areas such as commercial law, human rights, intellectual property, or international law, is a common route for those wishing to deepen their expertise.
