BA Law and Spanish
About this course
Law and Spanish is a combination with real professional purpose. Legal practice increasingly operates across borders, and the ability to work in Spanish, the language of one of the world's largest legal and commercial communities spanning Spain, Latin America, and international institutions, gives graduates a significant advantage in a range of legal and quasi-legal careers. The two disciplines also complement each other intellectually, both requiring precision in the use of language and the ability to work with complex systems of rules and interpretation. At the University of Stirling this four-year full-time programme is taught under Scots law, giving you a grounding in the Scottish and UK legal system alongside substantial Spanish language and cultural study. You will cover the core areas of law, including contract, delict, public law, and jurisprudence, while developing your Spanish from its current level to a high level of professional and academic proficiency. A year abroad is built into the programme, placing you in a Spanish-speaking environment and giving you the direct cultural and linguistic immersion that language acquisition requires. Stirling's academic community and its focus on student experience make it a distinctive place to study this combination, and the year abroad adds international experience that is especially relevant for a degree with obvious cross-border professional applications. Graduates go on to careers in law, with routes into the Scottish and English bars as well as international legal careers in firms with Spanish-speaking markets. Other graduates move into international business, diplomacy, NGOs, financial services, and government roles where legal knowledge and Spanish fluency together are a genuine advantage. Many also continue to postgraduate study in law, international law, or Latin American studies.
