About this course

Law and sociology is a joint degree that places legal study and social scientific analysis alongside each other in a way that illuminates both disciplines. Law is concerned with the technical and doctrinal aspects of legal rules and their application, with the institutions through which law is made and enforced, and with the professional skills of legal reasoning and argument. Sociology brings a different set of tools to bear on the same social world, examining the structures, inequalities, institutions, and cultural practices that shape how people live and how societies reproduce and change. Together they enable you to understand law not just as a set of rules but as a social institution embedded in power relations, history, and competing interests. At the University of Warwick, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and is taught within a faculty that has a particularly strong tradition of socially engaged legal scholarship and critical social theory. Warwick Law School has a long-established reputation for the sociological, political, and philosophical study of law alongside its doctrinal teaching, which makes it an especially well-matched environment for this combination. You will develop both the analytical and argumentative skills of legal study and the research and theoretical skills of sociology, engaging with social problems, institutions, and practices from both perspectives. A typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects the demanding academic standards expected of students at a Russell Group university with a strong legal tradition. Graduates work in the legal professions after further qualification, in policy, social research, the civil service, journalism, human rights organisations, and the full range of sectors where the combination of legal literacy and social scientific understanding is valuable. Postgraduate study in law, sociology, or socio-legal studies is a natural next step, and many graduates go on to academic careers that bridge the two disciplines.
