About this course

Law and criminology is a combination that is more coherent than it might first appear. Law defines and enforces the rules through which societies respond to behaviour they designate as criminal. Criminology examines crime and the criminal justice system from a social scientific perspective, asking why crime occurs, how it is distributed across populations and places, how offenders are processed by the justice system, and what works in terms of prevention, punishment, and rehabilitation. Together the two disciplines give you both the formal legal understanding and the critical social scientific framework to engage seriously with the rule of law and its consequences. At the University of Lincoln, this three-year full-time programme reflects the understanding that legal professionals and policy-makers benefit from an understanding of crime that goes beyond doctrine. You will study the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, land law, equity, and public law, developing the analytical and doctrinal skills expected of a law graduate, while also engaging with criminological theory, research methods, and the social dimensions of crime and justice. The programme includes a sandwich year in industry, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you extensive professional and international experience alongside the academic core. Lincoln has a well-regarded law school and strong connections with legal and criminal justice employers in the East Midlands and beyond. A typical tariff of 104 points reflects a broad entry standard within a programme that is designed to develop students' capabilities through engagement with challenging material. Graduates work in the legal professions after further qualification, in the criminal justice system, in social research and policy, in the civil service, and across a range of roles where both legal literacy and criminological understanding are relevant. Postgraduate study in law, criminology, or criminal justice is a further option.
