LLB Law and Commercial Law
About this course
Commercial law is the branch of legal study concerned with the rules and principles that govern business and financial transactions, and combining it with a general law degree at Birkbeck provides both the broad legal education that qualifies you across the range of legal practice and a focused expertise in the areas of law most relevant to business, finance and commerce. Commercial law encompasses contract law, company law, banking law, insolvency, intellectual property, international trade law and the regulatory frameworks that govern financial markets, and graduates with a thorough grounding in these areas are in strong demand in the legal profession and in business. This part-time LLB at Birkbeck College is designed for students who wish to pursue legal education alongside other commitments, and the college has a long tradition of providing high-quality legal education to students in this situation. You will develop the commercial awareness, knowledge of banking law and understanding of broader economic and private law issues that commercial law requires, alongside the foundational legal knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies that the LLB provides. Birkbeck's London location and evening teaching model make it particularly well suited to students who are working in financial or legal contexts and wish to study law concurrently. Graduates are eligible to proceed to vocational training for practice as barristers or solicitors in England and Wales. Commercial law graduates are particularly sought by law firms specialising in corporate, banking and finance, commercial litigation and regulatory work, as well as by financial institutions, investment banks, insurance companies and corporate legal departments. Further study at postgraduate level in commercial law, corporate law or financial law is an option for those seeking specialist expertise or academic careers.
