Law and accounting is a combination built for students who want to understand the world of business and commerce from both its legal and its financial dimensions. Law sets the rules within which commercial life operates: contract, company law, insolvency, regulation and tax law all shape how businesses are formed, run and wound up. Accounting provides the language of financial measurement, enabling organisations to track performance, plan for the future and meet their obligations to shareholders, creditors and regulators. Together, they produce a graduate with a distinctive dual perspective that is highly valued in professional and commercial life. At the University of Derby, you will explore a range of legal, factual and conceptual sources to develop a thorough understanding of the operation and methodology of the English legal system, alongside a solid grounding in accounting that covers key areas such as financial accounting and management accounting. The programme is three years full time, with a foundation year for students who need additional academic preparation before the main degree, a sandwich year giving you the chance to gain professional experience before your final year, and integrated work placements throughout. These structural features make the programme particularly strong on employability: by the time you graduate you will have both theoretical knowledge and real experience of applying it in professional settings.
