About this course

Latin and geography is a combination that might seem to span a wide intellectual distance, but it reflects a genuine truth about the humanities and social sciences: the ability to think carefully across different modes of inquiry, to read complex texts and landscapes with equal attention, is one of the most valuable and transferable intellectual achievements a university education can offer. Latin opens the door to the foundational literature of Western civilisation, while geography provides the tools to understand how the physical and human world is organised and how it changes. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme allows you to pursue both disciplines with flexibility. You will read Virgil, Ovid, and other Latin poets alongside Roman drama, oratory, historical writing, and biography, developing your linguistic and interpretive skills alongside your knowledge of Roman political and social history, philosophy, religion, and art. In the geography strand, you will engage with the major themes of the discipline, both physical and human, developing your understanding of landscapes, environments, societies, and the methods used to study them. A year abroad is available, which can enrich both strands of the programme, exposing you to different academic traditions and geographical contexts. Graduates from classics and geography combinations go on to careers in education, heritage, environmental and urban planning, research, journalism, publishing, and the civil service. The combination of linguistic precision, cultural knowledge, and spatial reasoning the degree develops is valued across many professional contexts. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in classical studies, geography, or related fields, and some pursue academic careers in either discipline.
