About this course

Latin and geography is an unusual combination that brings together one of the oldest of academic disciplines, the study of the classical Latin language and Roman culture, with one of the most contemporary and practically engaged, the study of the physical and human landscapes of the planet. Latin opens access to a vast and extraordinary literature: you will read Virgil, Ovid and other Latin poets, Roman drama, orators, historians, and biographers, and you will learn about Roman political and social history, philosophy, religion, and art. Geography equips you to understand how physical processes and human activities interact to shape the world you inhabit today. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme develops both disciplines with the depth that their pairing deserves. The Latin element gives you linguistic competence in one of the most important of the classical languages and contextual understanding of Roman civilisation in its full complexity. The geography element develops both physical geography, including geomorphology, climate, and hydrology, and human geography, including urban development, economic geography, and social theory, alongside the quantitative and qualitative research skills that modern geography uses. The programme includes a year abroad, which may involve classical study in Rome or geographical fieldwork in an international setting, depending on your focus. Graduates from this combination go on to careers in education, the civil service, heritage, journalism, international organisations, environmental management, urban planning, and research. The combination of classical learning and geographical analytical skill is unusual enough to be genuinely distinctive in the graduate market. Further study at postgraduate level in classical studies, geography, environmental studies, or archaeology is available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
