MA Language and Linguistics and Spanish & Latin American Studies
About this course
Language and linguistics combined with Spanish and Latin American studies brings together the scientific study of human language as a system with deep cultural and communicative immersion in one of the world's most widely spoken and geographically diverse languages. Linguistics asks fundamental questions about how language is structured, how it is acquired, how it varies across communities and changes over time, and what it reveals about the nature of human cognition. Spanish and Latin American studies provides rich material for exploring those questions, while also developing your linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding of the extraordinarily diverse societies that inhabit the Spanish-speaking world from Madrid to Buenos Aires and Mexico City. At Aberdeen this five-year full-time MA (Hons) gives you the depth of engagement that a longer degree allows. In linguistics you will develop analytical tools for examining phonology, grammar, semantics, and pragmatics, and you will explore the cognitive and social dimensions of language, including how and why languages differ and how they evolve. In Spanish and Latin American studies you will build high-level written and spoken proficiency alongside engagement with the literature, history, film, and political culture of Spain and Latin America. The combination means your cultural knowledge informs your linguistic analysis, and your analytical rigour deepens your engagement with Spanish as a language. Graduates are well placed for careers in teaching, translation, language technology, research, international business, diplomacy, journalism, and cultural organisations. The combination of rigorous linguistic training and genuine Spanish proficiency is valuable in both academic and professional contexts. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, Hispanic studies, or applied linguistics.
