About this course

Journalism and Spanish is a combination that reflects the genuinely international nature of modern journalism. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world by number of first-language speakers, with significant populations across Spain, Latin America, the United States and beyond. For a journalist, the ability to work in Spanish, to understand Spanish-speaking cultures and political contexts and to access Spanish-language sources directly is a significant professional asset, particularly as global events increasingly involve those regions. Journalism, meanwhile, provides the practical and intellectual training to find, verify and communicate stories in ways that serve the public interest. This four-year full-time degree at the University of Stirling includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop your Spanish language in an immersive environment and to experience journalism in a different national and media context. You will develop your Spanish to an advanced level alongside the full range of journalism skills: reporting, writing, editing, broadcasting and digital media production. The journalism strand develops your ability to work across formats, to understand media law and ethics, and to approach stories with the critical and investigative mindset that professional journalism demands. Graduates are well placed for careers in international journalism, foreign correspondence, news agencies, broadcast journalism in Spanish-language contexts, digital media and a wide range of communications and public affairs roles where both language and journalistic skills are valued. The combination of Spanish fluency and journalism training is particularly sought by media organisations with international operations or Spanish-language output. Many graduates also pursue careers in translation, public relations, communications consultancy or international organisations where the combination of linguistic and media skills is directly applicable.
