BA French with Film Studies
About this course
French and film studies is a degree that brings together two of the most culturally significant disciplines in the humanities. French is a major world language with a literary and intellectual tradition of extraordinary richness, spoken across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and beyond, and studied at the University of Warwick means developing language skills to a high level alongside deep engagement with French and Francophone culture. Film studies examines cinema as an art form, a commercial industry and a social and cultural phenomenon, developing the critical tools to understand how films construct meaning and why they matter. This four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a work placement, giving you professional experience alongside academic study. You will develop your French to an advanced level across reading, writing, speaking and listening, engaging with the literature, history, film and contemporary culture of the French-speaking world. Your film studies will develop your ability to analyse films closely, to understand film history and theory, and to situate particular films within broader industrial and cultural contexts. The two disciplines interact in interesting ways: French cinema is one of the most internationally significant national film traditions, and French critical theory has shaped film studies globally. Graduates move into careers in journalism, media, publishing, translation, broadcasting, the film industry, education, cultural organisations, public relations, communications and a wide range of other sectors where language skills and cultural knowledge are valued. The placement experience builds your professional network and practical skills, and many graduates find that the combination of French and film studies opens unusual and rewarding career paths. Further study in French, film studies, translation, media or cultural studies is also a common next step.
