BA Journalism
About this course
Journalism has always been essential to how societies make sense of themselves, and that role has grown more complex as the media landscape has fragmented across digital platforms, social networks and traditional broadcast and print channels. At its best, journalism holds power to account, surfaces stories that matter to communities, and provides the verified, contextualised information that democratic life depends upon. Studying it at degree level means developing both the craft skills of the journalist and a critical understanding of the media environment in which that craft is practised. At Goldsmiths, which has a long-standing reputation for challenging, socially engaged media education, you will learn to report, write, edit and broadcast across multiple formats. You will develop news judgement, interview technique, the principles of ethical and accurate reporting, and the ability to identify and pursue stories in complex information environments. Alongside practical skills, you will examine the political economy of news organisations, the relationship between journalism and power, questions of representation and diversity in the media, and the legal and regulatory frameworks within which journalists operate. The programme runs over three years full time and the typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points. Graduates move into roles in print, digital and broadcast journalism, in press and public relations, content strategy, documentary production, fact-checking, policy communications and media research. Goldsmiths graduates have worked in major national and international newsrooms, as well as in investigative and long-form journalism. The analytical and writing skills the course develops also open doors beyond traditional media, in public affairs, charity communications, political research and beyond. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate journalism qualifications or research.
