BDes Jewellery and Metal Design
About this course
Jewellery and metal design is a discipline rooted in one of the oldest and most technically demanding of the craft traditions, concerned with the shaping of metal, gemstones, and other materials into objects of adornment, function, and expression. Contemporary jewellery and metalwork ranges from fine precious jewellery to conceptual body objects, from production-oriented design to gallery-based art practice. It is a field in which traditional skills in soldering, fabrication, casting, and setting exist in dialogue with digital technologies including CAD, 3D printing, and laser cutting, creating a space of unusual creative and technical possibility. At the University of Dundee this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year and a year abroad, giving you both the technical foundation and the international perspective to develop a distinctive practice. Dundee's strong studio culture means you will work and share ideas in a supportive community of makers, developing your own voice in an increasingly diverse conversation about what jewellery and metalwork can be. You will develop skills across a wide range of making techniques and material processes alongside the critical and contextual knowledge needed to situate your practice in its historical and contemporary context. The typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects the portfolio-based and academically competitive nature of the selection process. You will develop technical craft expertise, material intelligence, creative vision, and the professional skills to present and promote your work to galleries, clients, and the broader design world. Graduates pursue careers as jewellery designers, goldsmiths, product designers, arts educators, gallery assistants, and craftspeople. Many build studio practices alongside other work in teaching or design. Postgraduate study in jewellery design, material culture, or fine art is a natural continuation.
