About this course
Japanese is one of the world's most structurally distinctive languages, combining three writing systems, a complex system of grammatical politeness levels, and a sound structure quite unlike any European language. It opens access to a culture of extraordinary richness and global influence: Japanese literature, cinema, philosophy, design, manga, and music have shaped contemporary global culture in profound ways, while Japan remains one of the world's largest economies and a major partner in technology, trade, and diplomacy. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year programme takes you from first principles in Japanese, or from a prior level depending on entry, through to a high degree of proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Edinburgh's Asian studies department provides a rigorous academic environment for language learning, and you will engage with Japanese literature, cultural history, contemporary society, and the intellectual traditions of Japan alongside the language itself.
