About this course

Italian and Economics is an unusual and genuinely powerful combination, pairing the linguistic and cultural depth of a modern language degree with the analytical rigour of economic thought. In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to operate fluently in another language while also understanding the economic dynamics that drive trade, business and policy is a rare and highly marketable skill. This four-year full-time programme at the University of Warwick develops both strands with equal seriousness, and Italian may be studied from beginners' level, making the programme accessible to students without prior experience of the language. You will develop Italian language skills progressively across the degree, from the foundations of grammar and vocabulary through to sophisticated engagement with literary and cultural texts, Italian political history, film and contemporary society. Alongside this, you will study the core principles of economic theory, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, and quantitative methods, and as the degree progresses you will apply economic analysis to international phenomena, exploring issues in trade, development, European integration, and the behaviour of firms and markets in a global context. A sandwich year gives you the opportunity to spend time in Italy or in a relevant professional setting, deepening both your language skills and your practical understanding of how economics plays out in real organisations. Work placement is also available as part of the programme. Warwick's reputation in both economics and modern languages, and its strong alumni networks, give graduates an excellent platform for graduate careers. Former students move into international business, banking and finance, consultancy, the civil service, European institutions, journalism and the media, and law. The combination of Italian and economics is particularly valuable in roles involving Italy, the EU, or international economic affairs. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in economics, European studies, or business.
