BA International Tourism Management
About this course
International tourism management is the study and practice of one of the world's largest industries. Tourism moves billions of people across the globe each year, generating income for destinations, jobs for millions of workers and a constant stream of management, marketing and operational challenges for the businesses and organisations that serve travellers. At the same time, tourism has complex impacts on the places and cultures it touches, and managing it responsibly requires understanding both the commercial and the social and environmental dimensions of the industry. At Derby, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you a full combination of structured academic study and professional and international experience. The foundation year provides an accessible academic entry point, and the programme then develops your management and operational skills across the full scope of the tourism industry. You will engage with destination management, hospitality operations, marketing, revenue management, sustainable tourism and the policy frameworks that shape how tourism is governed at national and international levels. The year abroad and work placement give you the opportunity to experience tourism management in different cultural and operational contexts. The programme is explicitly designed for the realities of the contemporary tourism industry, with a curriculum that reflects the changes the sector has undergone in recent years. Graduates work in hotels and hospitality management, tour operations, destination management organisations, airlines, cruise lines, visitor attractions, event management, tourism development and marketing. The management skills the degree develops also translate into adjacent roles in events, hospitality and the broader service sector. Postgraduate study in tourism management or hospitality management is a natural option.
