BA International Relations and Politics with Foundation Year
About this course
International relations and politics is the academic study of power in the world, examining both the dynamics between states in the international system and the domestic political processes through which governments make decisions and exercise authority. International relations asks how states interact, how wars start and end, what drives economic interdependence and conflict, how international institutions work, and how non-state actors from multinational corporations to terrorist organisations shape global affairs. Politics analyses power within states, covering electoral systems, political parties, ideologies, constitutions, and the processes through which societies govern themselves. At the University of Portsmouth you will study this four-year full-time programme, which includes a foundation year to provide academic preparation before the main degree. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and a placement are also built into the course, making this an exceptionally practice-oriented social science degree. The foundation year is designed to ensure that all students are fully prepared for the academic demands of international relations and politics, and the typical entry tariff of 120 points reflects the accessible entry point this provides. Across the full programme you will study international relations theory, global political economy, security studies, comparative politics, political thought, research methods, and contemporary global issues. The sandwich year and year abroad provide real international and professional experience that deepens the academic learning considerably. Graduates from international relations and politics programmes work in diplomacy, foreign affairs, international organisations, government and the civil service, journalism, international development, NGOs, and security and intelligence. The analytical, research, and communication skills developed during the degree are also valued in business, law, consultancy, and the voluntary sector. The combination of sandwich year, year abroad, and placement experience makes Portsmouth's graduates particularly attractive to employers who value practical as well as intellectual capability. Further study in international relations, political science, law, development studies, or public policy is a natural route for graduates seeking specialist or research careers.
