BA Interior Architecture and Venue Design
About this course
Interior architecture and venue design occupies a creative space at the intersection of architecture, interior design, and experiential spatial design. Where architecture is concerned with the design of buildings as structures and systems, interior architecture focuses on how spaces within and around buildings are shaped, arranged, and experienced. Venue design adds a specific focus on spaces designed for events, performances, exhibitions, hospitality, and entertainment, contexts in which the experience of the visitor or audience is central to the design brief. The discipline develops spatial thinking, visual communication skills, technical knowledge of materials and construction, and the creative and conceptual ability to imagine and realise environments that work both functionally and experientially. At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route into the discipline for students who are developing their creative and technical foundations before moving to the full degree. The combination of a foundation year, sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement means this programme offers an exceptionally full range of professional and international experience alongside the academic curriculum. You will develop skills in design process, concept development, spatial design, technical drawing and modelling, and the use of digital design tools alongside the contextual and theoretical knowledge that underpins professional practice in interior and spatial design. Venue design adds an industry-specific dimension, requiring attention to the particular requirements of hospitality, entertainment, retail, and exhibition environments, including circulation and crowd management, acoustic and lighting design, brand identity, and the experience of the visitor from arrival to departure. Work placement experience in design studios, events venues, or related organisations gives you direct professional exposure and helps you build the portfolio of work that is central to entering the design industry. Graduates from interior architecture and venue design programmes pursue careers in interior design studios, venue and event design, hospitality and retail design, exhibition design, production design, and set design for film and television. Postgraduate study in spatial design, interior architecture, or related fields supports those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue research.
